Lawyer’s feast

The PM was taking on ABC radio 774 today about the Turnbull-Grech business. The PM mentioned ‘matters of fact’.

According to article by-lined Godwin Grech in today’s SMH (I made some mistakes, but look at the good I did), three claims stand out as highly problematic.

  1. The dealer stated on several occasions words to the effect of ‘‘I am going to commit suicide. You are my last hope’’.
GG’s reaction to this (undocumented) conversation is contentious. Further investigation should include informed comment by professional Lifeline counsellors.
  2. The officer with responsibility for IT, Deidre Gerathy, informed me that for some unexplained reason the back-up servers failed on three critical days – one of which was February 20.
Failure of back-up servers is a serious issue in itself. What else was lost? What has been done to prevent further mishaps? Would a forensic investigation of the circumstances around these failures, and downstream consequences, turn up findings that are even more embarrassing?
  3. Senior Treasury management were aware I suffer from an incurable and degenerative disease of the small bowel that resulted in frequent obstructions that strike without warning. I have been told by doctors I have exhausted my ‘‘insurance’’. There is a significant risk that the next major episode will prove fatal. I live with this fear every day.
So, he’s been slaving away for nine months on a project, under threat of imminent death. A good one for the HR section and an industrial psychologist with experience in emotional blackmail.

At a guess, it would take a legal team of three a couple of days to decide whether or not there was anything in them to go on. What would that cost? A thousand per hour? $25,ooo would be a good investment by both Govt and Oppn.

My guess is that the Govt will decide to do no more than talk, as requested, about further action and leave other processes (Senate privileges, Grech’ compo claim) to follow their own courses. Minchin’s subtle threat to block the NBN may be grounds for haggling over Senate proceedings, but too early to predict how Turnbull will stand up to continued pressure. If the Govt can spin it out for a few more months it will make handy campaign fodder.
