Letter, The Australian. Trying to do a good job and being managed by idiots

THERE are at least two serious flaws in Nicola Roxon’s bid to finance reforms in healthcare. One is to take the brickbat to medical specialists, when a wiser course is to find common ground and then negotiate. The other is her wish to link savings from elsewhere to the few billion dollars needed to fund centralised electronic health records (“A flaky diagnosis”, Editorial, 26/8).

The fatal problem with her equation is that consumers have almost zero investment in their own health records. I mean, ask around your own office. How many people keep any (let alone all) of their interactions with the healthcare industry in a single file? If voters are not demanding a product, and one that can come only via increased taxes, they may regard it with a jaundiced eye.
