Ask the pathology industry. The answer is UMC – processing urine specimens for evidence of infection. The more tests done, the more that will be negative for infection (UTI) because there are only a limited number of UTIs in the population. So, instead of wasting their time and resources on urine test strips, GPs can send their patients off to a pathology collector for UMC. The pathologist collects the fee, most of which will be pure profit since most of the specimens will not require extra work. The GP gets the protein and glucose done for free. The only one who loses out, through lost time and inconvenience, is the mug punter.
Perhaps someone could look at the MBS data and costs of dipstick vs. UMC?
