Greg Sheridan agrees with Tony Abbott’s suggestions for immigration
policy (‘No need to lead from the front on ETS action’, 6/5). But we
will never have broad agreement on how to manage a skilled migration program until we tackle the “flood of illegal immigrants” problem.
Isn’t it possible to tackle invading boats with more robust application
of our laws? The men on those craft ought to be held responsible for the safety and welfare of the women and children aboard. We’d send a boat operator to jail for a long time if he knowingly sent people out on an unseaworthy craft.
When we have a firm grip on people trafficking, then we can turn to the population dilemma. Essentially, do we want our skilled migrants to come from Greece or Vietnam?
