Here’s the BBC in concert with Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies (UK)ratcheting up the fear, with doomsday scenario, catastrophic threat, apocalyptic, worse than terrorism, ticking time bomb. There can’t be much left in the arsenal.

Sally Davies is touting Innovative Medicines Institutehttp://www.imi.europa.eu/content/documents#grant_agreement as answer to the market failures that have dried up the antimicrobials development pipeline.
IMI describes itself as Public-Private Partnership. It’s all very well to beg for taxpayers money to add to the coffers of the most profitable corporations, but where are the safeguards? The documentation at IMI says nothing, not a word, or even a hint, that conflicts of interests may be a problem. Opinion-leading medicos, the same ones out there bleating “Doomsday!”, will be the channels of influence.
If the infant Antimicrobial Resistance lobby group in Australia wants to dump taxpayer money on Pharma, they should consider how they will manage conflicts of interests.
Medicos in the public health sphere would better serve the public interest if they got behind efforts to force Pharma to publish results of ALL trials (Ben Goldacre, etc) and encouraged the moves to make Pharma disclose which opinion-leaders have been the recipients of “sponsorship” money.
