When we take the next step toward a Republic, we will know we are, at last, taking the trouble to state how we want to define ourselves. The final step, beyond that, will necessarily stake out the Australia want to become. If it does not do that, it will fail, being trumped by “Why bother, then?”
If we can get there, it will be because we’ve been able to avoid the built-in booby trap of the “Reserve Power”.
If we can get there, it will be because, also, we’ve refused to be derailed by arguments about who we do not want be Australians. Irruptions, like the “home-grown bombers”, will threaten and will coalesce monarchists of all stripes.
