John Watson (Opinion, 23/9) refers to “the strange gloom revealed by an Essential Report survey last week.” One of the questions was on ‘trust’. There’s a long essay waiting to be written on the question “Whom do you trust?” Possible answers may include a bloke in Rome, any media mogul, a CEO, my financial adviser and my mother.
Those of us in stable democracies seldom have the chance to show our trust by our actions, the ultimate test. However, refugees stepping into an Indonesian fishing boat and recruits to Al-Shabaab know the meaning of the word.
One thing, though, is certain. Neither politicians, nor people who make a living from writing about them, should be allowed to even set the test paper on that question.
