Identity crisis

Forget this crazy talk of a citizenship audit of MPs and Senators. From now on, any parliamentarian who has doubts can resign under the impress of their own conscience. Anyone else who wants to challenge a sitting MP or Senator can do so through Disputed Returns. As for those who want to question Josh Frydenberg’s legitimacy, let them, please, find a solicitor who will take the brief to the High Court. Good luck with that exercise, it wouldn’t get out of the carpark.

The concept of citizenship is core to nationhood. But, first, we ought to be looking at how we manage the identity of each individual citizen. Biometric identifiers are being sought to improve government services. Genetic analysis is being made easily available.

The concept of identity (genetic and otherwise) is in the hands of the State (in our case, the Australian Federation) as are the practical matters of citizenship. The two are intertwined at that level and in the persons of each citizen. It’s the responsibility of the nation’s chief law officer (Attorney-General) to lead the legislation to embed both identity & citizenship in Law, if not in the Constitution.

Grasp the nettle, George.

Individual citizens can be identified by biometrics, genetic analysis and by digital footprint. The capabilities in all three fields seem to be way ahead of our governments’ abilities to protect privacy.
These facts are integral to citizenship. New legislation is needed to keep our concepts of identity and citizenship up to date, and could help break the stalemate over parliamentarians’ eligibility.
